Privacy Policy
Effective date: 28 October 2026
This policy explains what information Versed collects, why, who it is shared with, and the choices you have. Versed is a Bible reading app for iOS and Android that shows Scripture one verse at a time and can explain verses using AI.
Who we are
Versed is published by Eric Mutema, an individual developer based in Kenya (“we”, “us”). We are responsible for your personal data under this policy.
For any privacy question or data request, email emutema.mutema@gmail.com.
The short version
- You can read without an account. Your reading progress, saved verses, streak and onboarding answers stay on your device.
- If you sign in with Google, we receive your email address, name and profile picture from Google.
- When you ask for an explanation, the verse text, its reference, the translation and your chosen reading level are sent to our server and to Anthropic to write the explanation. We don’t send your name or email with it.
- We don’t show ads, we don’t sell your data, and we don’t track you across other apps or websites.
- We never see your card details. Apple or Google handle payments.
- You can delete your account in the app at any time.
Information we collect
Stored only on your device
- Where you are in the Bible, your chosen translation and the verses you save.
- Your reading streak and how many free explanations you’ve used this week.
- Your onboarding answers (how much time you spend on your phone, your goals, your Bible reading level, your reminder time) and the reading plan we suggested.
- Explanations you’ve already opened, so they load instantly next time.
This information never leaves your device unless a section below says otherwise. Deleting the app removes it.
Account information (only if you sign in)
- If you sign in with Google, we receive your email address, your name, your profile picture link and your Google user ID. We use them to create your account and show who you’re signed in as.
- Your account is stored with Supabase, our authentication provider, on servers in the United States.
Explanations
When you tap Explain, we send the verse reference, the verse text, the translation and your reading level to our server, which asks Anthropic’s Claude model to write the explanation. We don’t send your name, email or account ID. Our server keeps a short-lived copy of explanations in memory so repeat requests are fast, and briefly keeps your IP address in memory to limit abuse (20 requests a minute). Anthropic processes these requests under its commercial terms and does not use them to train its models.
Subscriptions
Purchases are handled by Apple or Google. We use RevenueCat to check whether you have Versed Plus. RevenueCat receives a customer ID (your Versed account ID if you’re signed in, otherwise a random ID), your purchase history for Versed, your country and your device type. We never receive your payment card details.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, we store your device’s push token with your RevenueCat customer record so we can send the reminders you ask for, including a notice two days before a free trial ends. You can turn notifications off at any time in your phone’s settings.
Bible text
Verse text is downloaded from bible-api.com, a public Bible service. Like any website, it can see your IP address when your device requests a chapter. We don’t send it anything else.
How we use information
- To show you Scripture, remember your place and keep your streak (on your device).
- To write explanations you ask for.
- To provide Versed Plus and restore it on your devices.
- To send reminders you’ve agreed to.
- To answer your support emails.
- To keep the service secure and prevent abuse.
We rely on performing our agreement with you, our legitimate interest in running and securing the app, and your consent for notifications.
Who we share it with
We only share information with the service providers that run Versed for us:
- Supabase (accounts and backend), United States.
- Anthropic (AI explanations), United States.
- RevenueCat (subscription status), United States.
- Apple and Google (app distribution, payments and push notifications).
- Expo (delivering push notifications), United States.
- bible-api.com (Bible text).
We don’t sell or rent your personal information, and we don’t share it with advertisers. We may disclose information if the law requires it.
International transfers
Our providers process data in the United States and other countries. Where required, they rely on safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
- Account information: until you delete your account.
- Explanation requests: kept in our server’s memory only while it is running; not stored in a database.
- Subscription records: kept by RevenueCat, Apple and Google under their own policies, including for tax and accounting.
- Support emails: up to two years after we last hear from you.
Your choices and rights
- Delete your account in the app at any time: Account → Delete account. See Delete your account.
- Access, correct or export your information by emailing us.
- Turn off notifications in your phone’s settings.
- Depending on where you live (for example under Kenya’s Data Protection Act, the GDPR, or California law), you may have further rights, including to object to processing or to complain to your data protection authority.
We reply to requests within one month.
Children
Versed is not directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, email us and we’ll delete it.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit. Access to our backend is restricted. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update the effective date above and, for significant changes, tell you in the app.
